Red Rocks Baptist Church Bio

Red Rocks Baptist Church was founded by a group of five people as Barnum Baptist Church on Dec 24, 1936. Pastor John Nichols was the founding pastor. In 1945, Barnum Baptist Church became First Baptist Church of Westwood and was Pastored by F. W. McKnight followed by Cliff Morton in 1952. The name of the church became South Sheridan Baptist Church (SSBC) on November 18, 1956, by a vote of the congregation. Due to health issues, Pastor Morton resigned in 1959.

On May 29, 1960, Pastor Ed Nelson became the senior pastor. Under the leadership of Pastor Ed Nelson, SSBC grew in membership and property. The congregation swelled to over 1000 in the 1980s and the church owned 80% of a city block. Pastor Nelson oversaw the opening of an elementary school in 1967. In 1971, the elementary school merged with a high school started by several churches in 1964. The new school was named Silver State Baptist School and consisted of grades Kindergarten through 12th grade.

Pastor Nelson hired Pastor Les Heinze in August 1984 as an assistant pastor. Pastor Nelson continued as senior pastor until his retirement from SSBC in May 1990. He served 30 years as SSBC’s senior pastor. Pastor Les Heinze was called and confirmed by the congregation to become senior pastor in May 1990.

During Pastor Heinze’s tenure, God led him to relocate from the current location on South Sheridan Blvd in Lakewood to an area with an increasing potential to reach more people for Christ. A committee of Deacons was formed to evaluate the South Sheridan location. The committee was then tasked with examining potential locations.

The current Morrison location was found, but consisted of several parcels with different owners. God opened doors and the Morrison Road property was purchased in December 2001 and consists of 30.58 acres. The church voted to change its name to Red Rocks Baptist Church (RRBC) on July 15, 2002.

Pastor Heinze wanted to leave the South Sheridan location to establish a gospel preaching church in a new location. While waiting for the Morrison Road property to be developed, the South Sheridan main church building, chapel, and pastoral office building were sold in 2004 to another church. The RRBC congregation began to meet in the gymnasium. In June of 2005, the school building and gymnasium were sold.

The church secured a loan for $5,102,207 to begin construction, and the church broke ground on July 10, 2005. While construction was taking place on the Morrison campus, the RRBC congregation rented another church at the corner of Kipling St. and Alameda Ave. The “Red Rocks Baptist Church” name began to be used at this time. The remaining Sheridan Blvd. property was sold in December of 2007. The RRBC congregation remained at the Kipling property while construction was being completed on the Morrison Road property. RRBC resided on the Kipling campus from July 2005 to March 2007. The opening service was held on March 25, 2007. The Morrison campus is 27.18 acres with the remanent being two commercial lots (3.4 acres total).

In an effort to reach younger families, the Red Rocks Christian Preschool began in August 2007 to meet the educational needs of nearby families. After many successful years, Silver State Baptist School closed in June 2016, while the Red Rocks Christian Preschool continues to reach young families with a staff of 12 dedicated employees. The RRBC assistant pastor oversees the pre-school while Director Leatha Peats, assisted by two Assistant Directors, Rebekah Fuller and Lilli Villalobos manage the school. Today, Red Rocks Baptist Church has a staff consisting of the Senior Pastor, one Assistant Pastor, one Youth Pastor, a Music Pastor, a Business Manager, two Administrative Assistants, and one custodian.

Red Rocks Baptist Church is currently in the process of selling 7.8 Acres of land to a developer. The acreage consists of two commercial lots, and athletic fields comprising another 4.4 acres. The contract was signed on March 25, 2022, and the sale is expected to close on October 12, 2022.

A typical Sunday at RRBC begins with Sunday School at 9:30 AM. Classes are broken down by age groups with each adult or family having the option to attend the class of their choice. The Sunday morning service begins at 10:30 with the 1st-4th grade children being dismissed after the song service. The evening service begins at 5:30 PM with the adults in the Fireside Chapel, the teens in their own room, and the younger children (3 years old through 6th grade) attend AWANAs.

Red Rocks Baptist Church has 179 giving units. The average Sunday giving is $22,500. The 2022-2023 fiscal budget runs from July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023. The budget is for $1,121,600. The Red Rocks Preschool budget is $618,920 for the same fiscal year. Red Rocks Baptist Church supports Missions through “Faith Promise” giving with a current budget of $151,000 supporting 32 missionaries and 2 organizations.

RRBC’s mission statement is “To Know Christ and Make Him Known”. The vision for the church is to reach the surrounding community for Jesus, sharing the gospel with those who do not know Jesus while training men and women to be committed followers of Jesus Christ.
